There was strong growth in the label and packaging market in 2021 and much of 2022. This turned into some weakness in some areas and even a decline in others in 2023. This will continue in 2024, considering the global economic situation, which includes the high cost of money, geopolitical issues and a dynamic environment in terms of consumer behavior.

Nevertheless, Rotocontrol introduced a strategy two years ago to help the company not only adapt to these challenges, but also to benefit from them. Rotocontrol is a dynamic company focused on delivering great value to customers. In 2024 and beyond, they want to focus on ease of use, automation, simplified maintenance and sustainability, bringing it all together to create added value for their own customers.

What innovative technologies or processes are you planning to introduce in order to strengthen the company’s competitiveness?

Mike Herold: Under the leadership of Marco Aengenvoort, Managing Director of Rotocontrol, our company will strengthen its competitiveness by working directly with customers to ideate, design, develop, build and support our label converting systems. The focus will be on die-cutting capabilities, sensor technology, networking, data transfer and management, automation and simplified operation and maintenance. Rapid technological advances are changing many aspects of several industries, including the broader manufacturing segment, and Rotocontrol will take full advantage of these changes.

How would you like to expand and differentiate your market position?

Herold: Expansion is about implementing our strategy and complementing our range of label converting machines with services to help our customers grow. We see good opportunities in certain segments of the label industry and have adapted our strategy and product development in the past last year to meet the new demand. We are already seeing the benefits of this strategic direction and know that this is due to the competitive differentiation we have created.

Are you considering strategic partnerships or collaborations to drive the company’s growth?

Herold: In the market we are operating in today, which involves a number of challenges that we have already outlined, companies like Rotocontrol must remain true to their strategic focus and continue to be very customer-oriented. Rotocontrol will continue to be open to new partnerships, the expansion of existing partnerships and the development of co-creative or co-innovative activities that benefit our customers and our company. We run our organization from the outside in. This means that we are constantly listening and innovating based on the needs of our customers.

How will you adapt to the changing needs and trends in the label industry, especially with regard to sustainability and digitalization?

Herold: It is an important part of our strategy to be more than just an equipment supplier. Of course it is important to deliver solutions for booklet finishing, hybrid production lines and other areas, but we want to make a difference to our customers and society beyond just supplying equipment. We welcome digital transformation and all that it brings from an operational perspective, but also how it will enable customers to work with their own customers to deliver sustainable label offerings this year and beyond. We all need to think beyond the machine, and at Rotocontrol this is at the core of what we do.

What measures are you planning to promote product development and innovation in the company?

Herold: For Rotocontrol, one of the most important aspects of new product development and innovation is developing a culture that supports and encourages both of these things. We started building such a culture two years ago. We are empowering our team to identify, develop, design and build new solutions that add real value for our customers. All our engineers and technicians are empowered to drive innovation within the team by innovating with our customers. This includes embracing design thinking, collaborating with external partners, leveraging emerging technologies, fostering an intrapreneurship mindset and prioritizing digital transformation and sustainability initiatives.

How do you plan to improve customer loyalty in order to build long-term relationships?

Herold: We have made building relationships with our existing and future customers a priority. Our aim is to build long-term relationships based on mutual learning. This means that we educate each other so that Rotocontrol can be a relevant partner for customers. This includes having a growth mindset, knowing that you can always get better, and using a design thinking approach so that our solutions always provide great value to our customers. And this process is working very well as we continue to grow our install base with our existing customers, with many returning to Rotocontrol for additional systems, because we are able to continually learn from each customer and help them add value.

What are your long-term goals for Rotocontrol and the label converting machine sector?

Herold: The Rotocontrol team is aware that we are in a challenging time. We therefore know that it is time to focus, invest and focus on growth. We will do this and are pursuing a strategy. This is crucial because the geopolitical, economic, labor and consumer challenges are not going away anytime soon. Rotocontrol will turn these into opportunities. Co-innovation, based on the learning relationships we have built with our customers, will continue to guide our implementation and delivery of new technology-based machine enhancements, in addition to ongoing services we will offer our customers. Overcoming existing challenges, turning them into opportunities, shaping the future efficiently and combining our technical solutions with the best people and services in the industry will all contribute to our long-term growth and success.
